This page marks the edges of what our journalism is. Everything here is reported to be accurate, and none of it is a substitute for somebody who knows your situation and is answerable to you for the advice they give.
Our reader has usually been away several days and arrives cold, which raises the stakes both ways. It means we work harder to be right, and it means being plain about the point where a well-reported article stops being enough.
Journalism, not advice
What we publish is general information for a general audience. It is not financial, investment, legal, medical, tax or employment advice, and nothing here is tailored to you, because we do not know your income, your diagnosis, your contract or the jurisdiction you live in.
Our business coverage explains why a central bank moved a rate and does not tell you what to do about your mortgage. Our health reporting describes what a study found, including how many people were in it, and cannot tell you whether the finding applies to you. Where a story touches something that could cost you money, your health or your liberty, the article is a starting point for a conversation with a professional.
Right on the day, and dated so you can tell
Every article carries a publication date, and later changes carry their own dated notes. That is deliberate, because news goes off. A figure is provisional, then revised. A charge is filed, then dropped. Prices, rates, squad lists and release dates all move after we publish.
Claims are checked before publication rather than after, by the sequence in our fact-checking policy. What we cannot offer is a warranty that an article is complete, current, or suitable for some purpose of yours. Where a question is unsettled we say so on the page instead of picking a confident version, and where a number is likely to be revised the warning sits in the sentence carrying it.
Reporting, analysis and opinion
These are three different products and each is labelled at the top of the page rather than in small print at the bottom. Reporting states what happened and who says so. Analysis reaches a judgement and shows the reasoning that produced it. Opinion is an argument, signed by the person making it.
Views in an analysis or opinion piece belong to the writer rather than the house, and we run pieces that disagree with each other. How that line is policed is in our editorial standards. Any forecast or projection in any of the three is somebody’s estimate and not a fact about the future.
Other people’s material
We link out constantly, because a reader should be able to check the ruling or the dataset instead of taking our word for it. A link is a pointer to evidence. It is not an endorsement of the site it points at, we do not control what that site does next, and pages we cited have been rewritten, paywalled and deleted since.
Quotes, photographs, documents and embedded posts from other sources are used under licence or as fair dealing with attribution, and the credit sits with the item. Their accuracy is the responsibility of whoever made them, though our own checks run before anything goes up. Embedded video and social posts are served by the platform hosting them, which can pull them at any time and leave a blank slot we cannot repair.
Advertising, and anything that pays us
Advertising is what makes this site free, and it is separated from the journalism by an arrangement the newsroom operates rather than a sentence of intent. An advertisement is not an endorsement, we do not vouch for what is advertised here, and a dispute over something you bought from an advertiser is between you and them.
Sponsored articles carry a label above the headline, look visibly different from our reporting, and are written by nobody in our newsroom. We run no affiliate links today. If we ever add them the disclosure goes on the article itself rather than in a footer, and no product will be recommended because a link pays. The categories we refuse outright, including sportsbook creative, grey-market key resellers and extended warranty finance, are listed on our advertise page.
If we got something wrong
Errors happen here as they do everywhere, and the difference is what follows. Tell us and it goes to the managing editor the same day, and you get an answer even when the answer is that we rechecked and are standing by the line.
The fix goes on the article where the error appeared, with a note saying what was wrong and when it changed, under our corrections policy. The address is support@thelittlebinger.com, and what helps is the article, the sentence, and the right version if you have it.
What we can be answerable for
We answer for our journalism, meaning the sourcing behind it, the labelling on it, and fixing it in public when it is wrong. We cannot underwrite what a reader decides to do afterwards, so to the extent the law allows, we accept no liability for loss arising from reliance on anything published here, including a decision to buy, sell, treat, sue, travel or vote.
The formal version of that limit, with the licence covering what you may do with our work, is in our terms of service. Anything on this page that reads as vague to you is worth an email, and an editor will read it rather than a lawyer.
