A fill of pure magic, romance, and fantasy- that’s what Lisa Macuja-Elizalde, Ballet Manila’s CEO and Artistic Director, promises to everyone who will witness Snow White. The adaptation of the beloved fairy tale will be the third outing of Ballet Manila’s 22nd Performing season, Flights of Fantasy.
Growing up, a week has not passed with me not watching Walt Disney’s animated classic Snow White. The story of love, family, and friendship stuck with me. The Prima Ballerina’s fascination with fairy tale is also one of the reasons for staging this show. As she puts it herself, “the classical ballets are all fairy tales, or at least stories, that have come to life in dance form.”
Ballet Manila’s take on the beloved fairy tale will be more Brothers Grimm than Disney in terms of the production’s look and feel. It will still enchant the viewers but the focus will mostly be on the story itself as Lisa Macuja-Elizalde wants the storytelling to be the main star of the show.
Staying true to the spirit of Ballet Manila, Snow White will exhibit its dancers’ mastery of the Vaganova technique. The performers have undergone the masterful choreography training by Ballet Master Osias “Shaz” Barroso. Completing the fantasy of the show are the exquisite costume and elaborate set designs.
Michael Miguel, a longtime Ballet Manila collaborator, designed the costumes. Macuja even hinted on audiences to keep an eye out for Snow White’s magical costume changes. Mio Infante’s set design is promised to create a lasting impact on the audiences as it harmonizes with Von de Guzman’s musical arrangement.
Truly, Ballet Manila Presents Snow White is a production worth keeping an eye out for. The country’s premiere ballet company has consistently brought magical experiences to its audiences. From Cinderella, Don Quixote, Ibong Adarna, and to the most recent, Swan Lake, it’s as if they are set to outstand each show. Ballet Manila keeps on soaring higher!
