They say that two is a company and that makes eight a party! Yup, in Ocean’s 8, it is one hell of a fun and exciting party. In the age of feminism, Warner Bros. Pictures gathered up the finest actresses of this time for a movie that takes the ‘he’ out of heist! The film proves that it is not just about the glitter, the heist, and the deception!
Debbie Ocean (Sandra Bulllock) sets a plan that was five years, eight months, and 12 days in the making into motion. Her first line of business: assemble a team to rob a precious jewelry during the Met Gala. Her former partner-in-crime Lou (Cate Blanchett) joins her first. With their connections, they together recruit a crew of specialists: a street con, an expert fence, a hacker, a fashion designer, and a jeweler. Their eyes are set to infiltrating the Met Gala and steal the coveted $150 million necklace that will adorn the neck of the world-famous actress Daphne Kluger.
Nothing but a perfect team to pull-off a perfect plan. Every piece of the puzzle is calculated which makes Ocean’s 8 a delightful watch. For a moment, I found myself getting awed by the sheer delight with this cast. Each of them added a particular flavor that made the movie an amazing dish. In a bowl of exciting ingredients, Bonham Carter and Blanchett were the stars of the dish. Their presence is an experience in itself.
Things that Shine
In this project with a stellar cast, it is just right for the MacGuffin or the item at the center of the plot to be jewelries. And it is a very smart move on their end to have it happen during one of the shiniest night in Hollywood- the Met Gala. Amidst the glitz and glamour is a pack of women who concocted a perfect plan to bag the prize and get away in plain sight.
Ocean’s 8 may have been every women’s desire- jewelry, designer clothes, and FASHION! Behind that, however, is a glaring problem- a weak motivation for the act. Partly it is for the money and the pride but at the same time, is revenge. Without giving away much of the plot, the story could have gotten away with or even discarded it in its entirety.
Despite that one problem, Ocean’s 8 is the signal that Hollywood should create more heist films. It captured the thrills and fun of the original Ocean’s movies. The stellar female cast was just the cherry on top! This just goes to show that women can outwit and outsmart men! It may not be so bad to see more female-led movies! Ocean’s 8 is glamorous, sexy, and fun!
It may just be a minor detail but I found myself smiling the entire movie.
