How are you doing this EECQ, Bingers? Are you and your family staying healthy? Please say yes. We are all stuck at home during the enhanced lockdown to flatten the COVID-19 curve in the Philippines. Last announcement was it will be extended up to April 30th as opposed to the original plan of April 14. That means we still have a lot of time in our hands. Of course, we can do productive things like growing our mini garden, keeping our body in check with home workouts, or just by streaming movies and series on Netflix! About the last part, I am sure you too are overwhelmed with titles to choose from. So, let me help you with that. Here are my 5 top picks for series to catch on Netflix during the Extreme Enhanced Community Quarantine.
- Kingdom (2019)
We Filipinos can’t get enough of our oppas. Korean drama has totally taken over us like a storm. So, let’s get a dose of our K-Drama minus the cutesy stuff. Let’s replace it instead with zombies and some highly timely political story. When Kingdom aired its 6-episode first season in 2019, it became a hit. The fast-paced narrative took over me that I binge-watched the entire thing in one sitting at home. Season 2 returned last month with 6 new episodes and it was highly addicting. Get your dose of blood, gore, zombies, and intense political drama!
- Money Heist (2017)
Bella ciao, bella ciao! I’m gonna be honest with you, Bingers. I started watching this series only two weeks ago. I was bored at home and I can’t pick a series to start. So, I checked Netflix’s recos and gave this a try. I’ve been wanting to see it for the longest time because it was hyped but the language became a barrier. One day, I decided to sit through it and wow, that was one of the best decisions I have ever made! Money Heist or La Casa De Papel is such a blast! The fast-paced series revolving on a group of thieves robbing the Royal Mint in Spain is one of the bests I have ever seen. As someone who loves strategies, Money Heist ticked a box on my list! Aside from its smart writing is a roster of greatly-written and nuanced characters. I particularly loved Berlin and Nairobi. Yes, these are technically the bad guys but the writers made me fall in love with them. And yes, this is more than just about the money. It is also about a revolution and speaking up against the government. La revolucion! Part 4 is now on Netflix!
- Sense 8 (2015)
Talk about a life-changing series! The Wachowski-produced Netflix series is the TV show that changed my life. It was ahead of its time and I am not exaggerating. To simply put the complicated plot, think of interconnected mind from around the world. Sense 8 packs a lot of heart, humor, and diversity. Not only that, it has a perfect representation on sexuality making it one of my top LGBTQIA shows! There are 2 seasons and 1 finale episode to wrap things up. Not gonna lie, I wept when this series ended.
- Ragnarok (2020)
We all know Thor from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The hammer-wielding hero came from Norse mythology but also had his iteration for comic purposes. But in this Netflix Original, we’ll have the Norse mythology set in a contemporary setting. Think of Riverdale sans the neon lights and unnecessary drama. The Norwegian series aired in January 2020 reintroduced us to Thor, Loki, and the Giants through a six-episode arc. Season 1 left me wanting for more but the good thing is they will soon be back!
- Dark (2019)
How about some German TV show? Dark is sci-fi drama whose plot revolves around the families of a small town in Germany. Their interconnected lives enrich the plot. As if that is not enough, have a time-travel element to make things more complicated. To be honest, putting it in words is not an easy thing to do that’s why I am going to suggest you see it for yourself. And yes, by the end of the second season, you will have this itch at the back of your head to ask, “when are we?”
BONUS: After obsessing over Money Heist, my friends suggested I go see Breaking Bad. And science, bitch! This is good!
