It’s a bird, it’s a plane. No, it’s Superman! And he has landed last June 1 at SM Mall of Asia to kick-off Philippines’ celebration of his 80th Anniversary! I attended the event and it was something that the geek in me thoroughly enjoyed. Read up on what went down and what to expect in the coming days!

It was a Friday afternoon and things are running slow in the office so I instead gave in to the geek in me. A quick few taps on my phone and I found myself inside a Grab to SM Mall of Asia. SM Supermalls, in collaboration with Pacific Licensing Studio and Warner Bros. Consumer Products, on behalf of DC Entertainment invited fans and media to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the iconic DC superhero.

Fans of All Ages

As a regular attendee of APCC, arriving at the launch was like attending a comic-con in itself. Well, except for one thing. Normally, I would be welcomed by a number of various superheroes but on that day, I saw Superman…supermen! Kids, teens, and adults were in their Superman shirt and there were also Superman cosplayers!

The short program for the media and the fans saw games, prizes, and preview at the cool stuff that are in store for the Man of Steel as well as the other DC properties. Also, it was only then that I learned that there are groups in the Philippines dedicated to this fandom. Justice PH and The Reign of the Supermen are a tight group of individuals that are, well, huge fans of the superhero and DC comics. Truly, Superman transcends all ages in his fan base!

Walk Through Time

80 years is no feat! Superman withstood lots of historical events both in the comics and in the real world! The displays at the event, for me, walked me through the time and to an extent, walked me through Superman’s rich history. Upon entering the venue, a panel welcomed me. It displays all the Superman comic book covers. Right behind it is a golden Superman statue and a giant ‘S’, their emblem for hope.

Also, displayed are action figures from die-hard collectors, authentic classic comics, and basically any Superman memorabilia that ever existed! Of course, as a treat to the visitors, there were also lifelike replicas of locations in Superman’s history that fans like I did truly enjoyed such as the Fortress of Solitude, Kal-El’s crashed ship, and the Kryptonian Prison ring!

The first leg at SM Mall of Asia atrium ran from May 29 to June 6. But don’t worry, you can still catch them as they will be touring around Metro Manila so make sure to catch them at these dates:

SM Megamall: June 8 to 15
SM Marikina: June 17 to 30
SM Makati: July 2 to 15
